our story

Rooted in history

Our story is a tale of family, community, heritage and the pursuit of exceptional beer, crafted with a simple philosophy: natural ingredients, no frills, just fantastic flavors.

Our journey starts on the grounds of our second generation family-owned pub, located in Matlock, nestled in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales. However the Derbyshire Dales aren’t just our backdrop; they’re our inspiration, and when you savor a Moot Ales beer, you’re savoring a piece of Derbyshire, infused with the essence of family, tradition and the timeless allure of our surroundings.

the moot ales legacy

our name

Our name, Moot Ales, is a nod to the history of our town, Matlock. Dating back to 1086, the original meaning behind the name Matlock was ‘the oak (tree) where a moot was held.’ In Anglo-Saxon England, a moot was an assembly, often convened in a shire or ‘hundred.’ It symbolises the spirit of community, discussion and coming together - the same spirit that infuses our craft. The very area we reside tells stories, and it’s in this landscape where our brewing adventure truly began.

100% natural ingredients

no frills, just fantastic flavours

At Moot Ales, we believe that great beer doesn’t need gimmicks or complexity. Our approach is refreshingly straightforward: we use the finest natural ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible, brewed traditionally, by us. This commitment to quality ensures that every sip you take carries the essence of our craft.
